Burns Night Tasting

Last Thursday saw our Robert Burn's tasting night take place in 57 Headline Bar on Clanbrassil Street. This was a delectable evening of poetry, whisky and traditional Scottish food. Leading the proceedings was Stephen Magennis and although his poetry reading skills may need some brushing up, his whisky knowledge never fails to impress.

The night proceeded in the following fashion:

Kilkerran Work in Progress 5  Bourbon Wood

Very typical Campbeltown style whisky. Expect aromas of apricots and dried fruit, with light smoke. Very smooth, sweet and fruity on the palate, with a dry finish.

The Arran 14 Year old

A wonderful mix of gingery fruit, toffee apples and roasted nut flavours.

Hazelburn 10 Year Old Rundlets and Kilderkins

The name comes from the small barrels used for ageing the single malt. Each barrel is 60 or 80 litres in capacity and the increased surface contact give a whisky that tastes older than its ten years of age.

Springbank 12 Year Old Green

This is a creamy and sweet whisky with classic Springbank peatiness giving depth and a hint of coastal air.

BenRiach 20 Year Old

Big oaky nose with aromas of toffee and honey. Warm floral and malty on the palate, with a long finish.

Balvinie 15 Year Old Single Barrel

Only the best of the Balvenie distillery's inventory get selected for their single cask range. This came from a solitary ex-Bourbon barrel and highlights Balvenie in its purest and most naked form.

Glendronach Cask Strength

A powerful and forceful version of GlenDronach that is drawn solely from Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez sherry casks. Lots of cocoa, mocha, juicy fruit, malt and honey flavours.

Caol Ila 25 Year Old

Aged to perfection. This is often desribed as being silky smooth, and does not have any harsh oak notes sometimes found in whiskies at this age.

As always we hope that everyone enjoyed their evening, we are sure that Robert Burn's would not have been disappointed. Many thanks to the Headline Bar for accommodating us on the evening. Our next tasting will take place on 19th February at the Palace Bar, Fleet Street. The title of this tasting is 'BenRiach Distillery Single Casks'. We hope to see some of you there!
